How does the Compass Card work? How do I tap in and tap out? Print

To ensure everyone gets the best fare and can use the system in a predictable way, the Compass system uses a simple "tap-in/tap out" process.

When you enter or exit a bus, SkyTrain station, SeaBus terminal, or Westcoast Express platform, you place the Compass Card flat against a card reader.
Transactions take place in 1/3 of a second as you tap in (on entry) or tap out (on exit).
When you tap out, the correct fare is automatically calculated.
